At Least 24 Count Dead In Senegal Immigrant Wreck

Developing Story

A migrant boat carrying an estimated 300 people capsized off the coast of northern Senegal, causing a major disaster. Rescue workers are overwhelmed searching for survivors and retrieving bodies. The governor of Saint-Louis, Alioune Badara Samb, said 24 bodies had been found.

The overloaded boat, likely headed for the Canary Islands, was traveling a dangerous route known for strong currents and fragile vessels. Local authorities are battling to cope with the influx of survivors, who are primarily Guinean and Senegalese. President Macky Sall offered condolences and mobilized support for the survivors. How can governments discourage such dangerous voyages?
