Ugandan Police Intensify Anti-Corruption Drive, Detain Fifth NRM Legislator.

Over the weekend, news made rounds that two members of parliament one from the East and another from the west had been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli for questioning. These are connected to the Shs164billion cooperative scandal and were to appear on Wednesday 19th for grilling and questioning.Indeed after receiving the summons through parliament, Igara county Members of Parliament Hon Micheal Mawanda and Elgon County MP Hon Ignatius Wamukuyu Mudimi presented themselves and were subjected to hours of interrogations and questioning. At the end of the day, the two were detained.

Micheal Mawanda who is the Chairperson of Muhoozi’s PLU disciplinary committee was detained at Natete and it’s where he slept while his counterpart from the East Mudimi was detained at Kira division where the remanded three legislators were detained last week.Mawanda, Mudimi and Akamba among others are said to have influenced the disbursement of cooperative compensation money worthy Shs164billions from the Ministry of Trade. It’s said the beneficiaries didn’t get their money but the legislators received money in billions through several law farms.

The number of MRM Members of Parliament facing corruption charges this year alone comes to five after Yusuf Mutembuli [Bunyole East], Cissy Namujju [Lwengo district] and Paul Akamba [Busiki county] were arrested, remanded and committed to the high court to trial in a case where they’re accused of asking for a bribe from Uganda Human Rights Boss Mariam Wangadya. The Anti-Corruption court remanded and committed to the high court three Members of parliament who were also ministers in Museveni’s government over the Mabaati scandal. The three included Buduuda MP and former minister Agnes Nandutu, Managwa MP and former Minister Dr Mary Goreti Kitutu and Ntenjeru MP and State Minister for planning Amos Lugoloobi. The three are still facing the charges.
