Flooding Nightmare: MPs Inspect Nakivubo Channel, Demand Action.

By Dean Lubowa Saava

Law makers from the August house led by Kiggundu Hamis, made a fact find visit to inspected the ongoing works at the Nakivubo drainage channel in Kampala. During the inspection, Kiggundu expressed concern over the rampant dumping of solid waste into the channel, which is disrupting its functionality.

“This channel was originally designed to carry storm water, but pouring solid waste has been causing serious interference with the flow of water, which causes flooding,” Kiggundu observed. The MPs noted that the channel’s blockage not only leads to flooding but also poses health risks to residents living in the surrounding areas.

The legislators urged the authorities to take immediate action to address the issue, including sensitizing the public on proper waste disposal practices. They also called for increased enforcement of laws and regulations to prevent further dumping of solid waste into the channel.

The inspection aimed to assess the progress of the ongoing works and identify areas that require improvement to prevent future flooding in the city. The MPs’ concerns highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to managing waste and ensuring the effective functioning of critical infrastructure like the Nakivubo drainage channel.
