Uganda’s Golden Hope: Cheptegei and Kiplimo Eye Top Honors in Paris 10,000m…. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown in the 10,000 meters final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, as two Ugandan athletic giants, Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, lead the pack with their impressive credentials and rigorous preparation.
Cheptegei, a seasoned veteran with a personal best of 26:11.00, stands tall as the favorite, followed closely by Kiplimo with a time of 26:33.93. The Canadian Ahmed Mohamed and Ethiopian Selemon Barega round out the top contenders.
Cheptegei, an Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion, is on a quest for the ultimate prize – an Olympic gold medal in the 10,000 meters. With his world record in the event and a stellar career, he views the Paris Olympics as a crucial opportunity to cement his legacy before potentially transitioning to marathon running.
His enthusiasm is palpable, “I’m excited for the Paris games and I look forward to an amazing Olympics. I feel good and ready to chase my dream of becoming a world champion once again.”
Kiplimo, a force to be reckoned with, has been training tirelessly, fueled by his determination to improve upon his bronze medal performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His recent victory at the 2024 Belgrade World Athletics Cross Country Championships has only added to his confidence.
A talented field of athletes, including Nico Young, Kejelcha Yomif, Aregawi Berihu, and Kenyan runners Daniel Mateiko, Nicholas Kiprokoril, and Bernard Kibet, will also vie for glory. Fisher Grant from the U.S. will be another key participant in the race.
Uganda’s Halima Nakaayi will make her mark in the 800 meters heats, fresh from setting a new national record with a time of 1:57.56. Joy Cheptoyek, Esther Chebet, and Belinda Chemutai will kick off their campaigns in the 5,000 meters heats, each with their sights set on making history.
The Ugandan team, backed by the government and sponsors, is primed and ready to take on the world’s best in Paris.
