Kyambogo University Suspends 17 Students, Including Guild President, Over Tuition Protest

Kyambogo University has suspended 17 students, including Guild President Benjamin Akiso, for their alleged involvement in a protest against tuition policies that students claim are unjust.

In a statement issued on April 29, the university announced that the suspensions were effective immediately, citing student participation in a demonstration held on April 23 that disrupted normal campus operations.

“In accordance with Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations, the following students have been suspended for their participation in a protest that interfered with university activities,” the statement read.

The suspensions are set to last for one month, pending formal disciplinary hearings. During this period, all suspended students are barred from accessing university premises.

Individual suspension letters, signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka and dated April 28, outline accusations that include inciting unrest, forcefully removing students from lecture halls, and burning tyres outside the university gates in the Banda neighborhood of Kampala.

The university maintains that disciplinary action is necessary to uphold order and safeguard institutional operations, but some student leaders argue the suspensions are a form of repression against freedom of expression and protest.
