National Unity Platform Cracks the Whip on Defiant MPs Ahead of 2026 Elections

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has given four of its Members of Parliament a 30-day deadline to resolve their issues with party leadership or risk being dropped from the ticket ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The warning was issued on Tuesday by NUP Deputy President for the Buganda Region, Hon. Mohammad Muwanga Kivumbi, during a central region leaders’ meeting at the party’s headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala.

“We’re giving our colleagues a month to engage with the leadership and iron out their differences,” Kivumbi said. “We can’t afford disunity if we’re serious about expanding our presence in Parliament. Our goal is to win over 100 seats.”

The MPs currently under scrutiny for allegedly going against party positions are:

  • Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe)
  • Abed Bwanika (Kimananya-Kabonera)
  • Bashir Kazibwe (Kawempe South)
  • Twaha Kagabo (Bukoto South)

Party President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, echoed the message, setting a firm deadline of June 22, 2025, for the MPs to reconcile with party leadership. After that, he said, the NUP would begin selecting new candidates to contest those seats.

“We are looking for candidates who are consistent, trustworthy, and committed to the cause,” he said. “This time around, we’re rallying the people to vote for change at every level—from the presidency down to local councils.”

Kyagulanyi didn’t hold back in criticizing those who, in his words, have “betrayed” their voters and the party. “When you let the people down, you’re no different from a thief. We won’t repeat past mistakes.”

According to party officials, the move is part of a larger effort to restore discipline and strengthen cohesion within NUP as it prepares for a more assertive and strategic campaign heading into 2026.

As of Tuesday evening, none of the four MPs had made any public statement in response to the ultimatum.
