The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced the appointment of new leaders to head two key institutions within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Brigadier General Alex Opolot Olupot has been named the new Commandant of the National Defence College – Uganda (NDC-U), located in Jinja. He succeeds Major General Francis Okello, the founding commandant of the college, who is set to retire later this year. NDC-U, established in 2022, serves as a premier institution for advanced military education and strategic leadership training.
Prior to this appointment, Brig Gen Olupot served as the Chief of Joint Staff Training and Doctrine.
In a related development, Brigadier General Micheal Kabango, currently serving as Chief of Staff – Land Forces, has been appointed as the new Commandant of the Senior Command and Staff College (SCSC) in Kimaka, Jinja. He replaces Major General George Igumba, who will also be retiring in the near future.
Both outgoing officers—Maj Gen Okello and Maj Gen Igumba—have had distinguished military careers spanning over four decades. Throughout their service, they held various command and staff positions and contributed significantly to the professional development of Uganda’s armed forces.
Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, extended his gratitude to the retiring officers for their dedicated service and wished them well in retirement. He also congratulated Brig Gen Olupot and Brig Gen Kabango on their new roles.
“The UPDF fraternity congratulates Brigadier Generals Alex Opolot Olupot and Micheal Kabango. We are confident they will take these institutions to the next level,” Col Magezi stated via social media.
