Commissioning Rukoki Health Center IV an Elevated Project to Hospital Status

The elevation of Rukoki Health Center IV to a general hospital is a significant development for the residents of Kasese district, as it’s expected to greatly improve healthcare access in the region. This upgrade is a response to the health center’s existing operational capacity, which has been equivalent to that of a hospital, despite its previous classification.

The health center has been handling a substantial workload, with over 300 mothers delivering monthly, despite facing challenges such as limited bed capacity and inadequate infrastructure. The maternity ward, which was gutted by fire in June 2024, has since been rehabilitated with support from organizations like Rotary Snow Peaks and Medicins Sans Frontiers.

The Ministry of Health’s decision to upgrade the health center to a hospital is a welcome move, as it will likely address the existing healthcare gaps in the region. However, it’s worth noting that the health center has been struggling with inadequate space and infrastructure, which will need to be addressed to ensure the hospital can operate effectively.
