Museveni Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Infrastructure Development for AFCON 2027

President Yoweri Museveni has reiterated the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure in preparation for Uganda’s role in co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

During a tour in Bunyoro, the President, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, inspected ongoing construction at Hoima Stadium.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, President Museveni explained that the government had initially planned to develop Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira for historical reasons. However, the decision to choose Hoima as the site for the stadium was influenced by the town’s strategic advantage—its proximity to an airport under development, which will ensure better accessibility for both teams and fans during the tournament.

“I would like to congratulate the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements, which will boost the local economy,” President Museveni stated.

He also urged the private sector to invest in hotels and other amenities to accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors.

The development of Hoima Stadium is a key milestone in Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 AFCON, which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania. The project is expected to create job opportunities, boost tourism, and improve sports facilities for local athletes.
