TECHNOLOGY: The Uganda E-Passport Revolution.

Uganda has joined the list of 172 countries and regions that are using e-passport.

The new introduced travel system will help Ugandan Citizens with e-passport who can easily use self e-gates at Entebbe airport. This system is only favourable to Ugandan citizens with the passports.

These are some of the steps that will be taken as far as this system is concerned and these are;

Touch the screen, place your passport and scan it, hold it until the machine tells you to remove the passports, confirm if the scanned person and the person in the system is your self by touching yes, you select the flight used and the element of returning, proceed to look into the camera which is above the screen to much you facial with the record in the ABC and finally it will issue you a ticket to proceed to use the e_ gate.

The system was specifically designed for Ugandan Citizens, according to the Government.

In the effort to increase the efficiency and security, the directorate of citizenship and immigration control has announced that all Ugandans arriving from a broad have the option to utilize the self clearance gates at Entebbe international airport.

The new e-gates at the airport will speed up passport control by following passengers to scan their own passports. It uses facial recognition to verify identity and it also captures the travellers image.

Last year, government announced the upgrade of paper based e-passport to polycarbonate e-passport designed with a strong anti- fraud features, making them suitable for use at the new electronic gates at the airport for self clearance, automated boarding pass issuance and quick passenger processing around the world.

According to immigration, as per last week, they had issued out only 1,346,560 passports- both paper based and polycarbonate from the time they phased out of EA passports in 2018, noting that over 43 million Ugandans don’t have passports.

According to the internal affairs ministry, express passport applications are now disposed off in two days with the applicants receiving their passports while for ordinary applicants get their passports while for ordinary in 10 working days.

One will be given an appointment in the next 30 minutes.This e-passport system is sometimes not safe as unprotected chips are subjects to clandestine scanning or eavesdropping. e-passports use standard ISO 14443 which generates unique chip ID during protocol initiation. Using this Unique ID, The e-passport holder can be tracked by authorized parties.
