Today the 23rd of February 2024, the shadow cabinet headed by the leader of opposition Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi has been sworn in to officially start their duties.
In an event held at Imperial Royale Hotel, the new shadow cabinet presented their priority areas to the country and the sworn in leaders promised to keep the government in check as a way of ensuring accountability in all government programs.
Those who might not know the current shadow cabinet, the shadow Minister for Agriculture is Asinasi Nyakato, the Minister of East African Affairs is Lucy Akello, Culture and Performing Arts is Kiyaga Hilary, for Human Rights it is Shamim Malende, Trade and Industry is Manjeri Kyebakutikka, for Kampala Capital City, it is Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo, Finance, Planning and Economic Development it is Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda for Education, it is Joseph Ssewungu Gonzaga.
The shadow Minister forJustice and Constitutional Affairs is Jonathan Odur, for Land, Housing and Urban Development it is Luttamaguzi Ssemakula, for Sports, it is Kayemba Solo, Public Service it is Anna Odeke Ebaju, Foreign Affairs it is Muwada Nkunyingi, for Gender Labour and Social Development it is Fortunate Nantongo, Local Government, Betty Ethel Naluyima, Internal Affairs it is Betty Nambooze Bakireke, Energy and Minerals it is Evans Kanyike, for Works and Transport it is Mwijukye Francis, for the Youth and Children Affairs it is Kabuye Frank, for Water and Environment it is Christine Kkaaya, Tourism is for Nyeko Derrick, for Health it is Timothy Batuwa, the Minister for Science Innovation and Technology is Okin Ojara, for Cooperatives and Micro Finance it is Joan Achom Alobo and Nimbeshe as the Opposition Chief Whip.
On the side of committees, the Chairperson of COSASE is Medard Lubega Sseggona deputised by Allan Mayanja, the Chairperson Local Governments Accounts Committee is Gilbert Olanya deputised by Kawalya Abubaker, the Chairperson Government Assurance Committee is Abed Bwanika deputised by Joyce Bagala and the Chairperson Public Accounts Committee is Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi deputised by Namugga Gorreti and Wilfred Niwagaba as the Attorney General.
Joel Ssenyonyi replaced the current Commissioner of Parliament Mathius Mpuuga who is remembered for having put in place a good working relationship between the shadow cabinet he was leading and the central government, though he is still criticised for having failed to negotiate for the release of NUP supporters who were jailed during the 2021 elections. Let us hope that Joel will do better on this.
