ENVIRONMENT: THE ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS.

The world press Freedom day is always celebrated on 3rd may every year in order to raise the awareness and promote freedom of expansion.

According to UNESCO, the 2024, World press freedom day will be dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023, set by UNESCO, is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.” This theme emphasises the crucial role of press freedom, independent and diverse media, and freedom of expression in upholding all human rights.

This is because of the rampant deforestation and mis use of water bodies by putting rubbish in water bodies and this has become a threat to the human life and aquatic life.

The above habit is common in Western and South Western Uganda in the districts of kasese, Ntoroko and bundibugyo deforestation remain an increasing concern due to agricultural expansion and logging.

Water pollution due total industrial activities and poor waste disposal especially in River Nyamwamba in kasese and mpanga in fort-portal, river Rwizi in Mbarara . The same regions face un predictable weather patterns that affect agriculture and live hood, loss of of biodiversity driven by habitat destruction and poaching, threatening the unique flora and fauna.

There are some other issues like soil degradation and erosion, limited knowledge and awareness on environmental conservation by locals, inconsistent enforcement of environmental regulation.

The massive cutting of trees for charcoal that is left un checked by the carless district authorities has led to the disruption in hydrological cycle as well as incalculable damage to the social fabric of the community.

The expansion of large scale commercial farming is reportedly dumping pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals into the water supply .The increased encroachment of game parks and forests has made the people’s gardens and homes ruined.The expansion of Roads in some regions has created a large demand of rocks and gravel leading to pollution and destructive quarrying operations.

Large Herds of cattle are laying wast to what had been community harding lands and farmlands. This is disturbing community water when it is done from wetlands.

The rampant introduction of irrigated agriculture will further reduce the community’s access to water. the prolonged drought, frequent flooding and landslides in Eastern Uganda are disrupting other Economic activities like agriculture.
