The Legacy of Rhoda Kalema: A Trailblazing Figure in Ugandan Politics

Rhoda Kalema, affectionately known as the “Mother of Parliament,” left an indelible mark on Uganda’s political landscape. Born on May 10, 1929, she rose to prominence through her tireless advocacy for women’s rights, her unwavering dedication to public service, and her pioneering role in shaping the country’s governance. Kalema’s early life was marked by a strong educational foundation, which laid the groundwork for her future achievements. She attended Gayaza Junior School and King’s College Budo, before pursuing social work studies in Scotland. This exposure not only broadened her perspectives but also instilled in her a deep commitment to improving the lives of others.

Her entry into politics in 1961 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. Kalema’s leadership skills, coupled with her passion for social justice, earned her key roles in Uganda’s government. She served as a Deputy Minister of Public Service from 1989 to 1991 and was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1994, where she made history by defeating eight male opponents in Kiboga District.

Throughout her career, Kalema championed women’s empowerment and rights. She was a mentor to many female politicians, including Ruth Nankabirwa, and played a pivotal role in shaping policies that benefited women and marginalized communities. Her legacy extends beyond her political achievements, as she paved the way for future generations of women leaders.

Kalema’s contributions were recognized both nationally and internationally. She received the Sudreau Global Justice Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, a testament to her dedication to justice and democracy. Her commitment to public service was unwavering, and her impact on Uganda’s political landscape continues to inspire.

Rhoda Kalema passed away on August 3, 2025, at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape Uganda’s future. Her pioneering spirit, dedication to social justice, and advocacy for women’s rights have left a lasting impact that will inspire future generations.

Rhoda Kalema’s life and legacy serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community and country. As Uganda continues to evolve, Kalema’s contributions will remain a guiding force in shaping the country’s future.
