The Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the by-election to fill the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the by-election to fill the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat.

This seat fell vacant earlier this month following the passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who died at Lubaga Hospital after weeks of hospitalisation.

EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama announced that the electoral process to select Ssegirinya’s successor will commence this week across the 197 polling stations.

Byabakama shared this preliminary schedule during a stakeholders’ meeting and press briefing held at Tick Hotel in Kawempe.

According to the tentative programme, Candidate nominations will take place from February 26 to February 27, 2025.

The inspection of candidate papers is to occur from February 27 to March 5, while campaigns are scheduled to run from February 28 until March 11.

Ahead of the polling day, March 13, Byabakama mentioned that anyone wishing to serve as an election observer for the by-election must apply to the commission for approval.

“The Commission further welcomes proposals and suggestions aimed at ensuring the conduct of free and fair electoral activities in Kawatwe Divisional. The Conduct of Election involves many stakeholders. Adherence to the electoral laws and guidelines by all stakeholders during the entire electoral process is therefore very crucial,”

He added that the by-election will be overseen by Henry Makabai, the returning officer for Kawempe, with Rehema Nassuna serving as the assistant returning officer.

The EC chairman called for calmness among the candidates and cautioned them against engaging in bribing voters.

“We are all stakeholders in this exercise, and therefore let us work together to deliver a peaceful, free and fair by-election to the mutual satisfaction of all stakeholders.” Byabakama said.
