Sunrise Hotel Fire in Kampala Leaves Several Injured and Fears of Casualties

A massive fire has engulfed Sunrise Hotel on Khamis Road in downtown Kampala, leaving several people injured, with fears of casualties still mounting.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as flames and thick smoke rapidly spread through the multi-story building. Some occupants were seen jumping from upper floors to escape the inferno, while others screamed for help. “We saw people jumping to save their lives. The fire spread very fast, trapping many inside,” said one eyewitness.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and medical teams, rushed to the scene as crowds gathered nearby. The Kampala Metropolitan Police have confirmed that investigations are underway, and rescue operations remain a priority.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. This incident adds to the growing concern over a rise in fires across Uganda, many of which have resulted in loss of life and property damage.

In 2023, a school dormitory fire in Mukono tragically claimed the lives of at least 11 students, sparking heightened concerns over fire safety in public buildings. Later in 2024, the Park Yard Market in downtown Kampala was destroyed in a fire, leaving traders with millions of shillings in losses.

Several commercial buildings, including arcades and hotels, have fallen victim to fires, often linked to electrical faults, poor safety standards, and delayed emergency response times. Despite repeated calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations, many structures continue to remain vulnerable.

Authorities have urged building owners to install fire suppression systems and conduct regular fire drills. Investigations into the Sunrise Hotel fire are ongoing, with officials expected to provide updates on the number of casualties and the possible cause of the fire.
