Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde Leads Delegation to Chief Justice’s Residence, Signals New Era of Collaboration

In a significant move towards strengthening Uganda’s justice system, Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde led a delegation to Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo’s residence in Nakasero, Kampala. The meeting, initiated by an invitation from the Chief Justice, aimed to discuss pressing justice delivery issues and congratulate Ssemakadde on his recent election victory.

Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo emphasized the judiciary’s openness, stating, “We do not discriminate; we welcome all feedback and criticism.” This gesture underscores a collaborative approach to addressing Uganda’s justice system challenges.

As a renowned human rights lawyer, Ssemakadde took office after winning the ULS presidential elections with 2,101 votes, defeating Isaac Atukunda. He is known for his radicalism, activism, and fearlessness in defending justice. Ssemakadde has pledged to tackle moral bankruptcy within the judiciary and serve with integrity.

The Uganda Law Society has taken bold steps under Ssemakadde’s leadership, including:

Expulsion of Attorney General and Solicitor General: Due to conflict of interest and professional misconduct, the ULS expelled the Attorney General and Solicitor General from its Council.

Upholding Judicial Accountability and Integrity: This move aims to restore public trust in the legal profession amid concerns about integrity and accountability within Uganda’s justice system.

The meeting between Ssemakadde and Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo marks a new era of collaboration between the Uganda Law Society and the judiciary. With Ssemakadde’s leadership and vision, Uganda’s justice system is poised for transformative change.
