The Rise And Fall Of NUP Under the Leadership of Kyagulanyi.

The National Unity Platform which in Swhail is Jukwaa La Umoja wa Kitaifa, formerly the National Unity, Reconciliation and Development party.

NUP is a political party in Uganda led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

It was led by Moses Nkonge Kibalama from 2004 until July 2020 when the name was changed to national Unity Platform under the leadership of principle Kyagulanyi.

While running for the Kyaddondo East seat, Kyagulanyi was shunned by both the DP and FDC political parties, so he ran as an Independent candidate.

He adopted the people power slogan as his rallying call leading to what is referred to as people power movement in  in Uganda.

Since the formation of the People Power Movement in 2017, a number of legislators, including members of the ruling National Resistance Movement and opposition Forum for Democratic Change, have allied with People Power.

The People Power movement finally got a legally registered party NURP and changed the name to the National Unity Platform and on 22 July 2020, the founders of NUP, together with leading personalities from the People Power Movement, announced that Kyagulanyi had been elected President of NUP and presidential party flag bearer in the upcoming 2021 national elections.

The party is registered with the Uganda Electoral commission whose party’s symbol is an umbrella in red, white and blue surrounded by the three circles in red, White and navy blue. The NUP symbol is fully gazetted by the Uganda Electoral Commission.

On 28 July 2020, the party unveiled membership cards that cost only USh1,000 , an amount they said did not discriminate against social class and would be affordable to every Ugandan.

On 3 August 2020, the party president announced five members of parliament who crossed that day to the National Unity Platform from other political parties in Uganda.

On 14 January 2021 general elections took place. According to a survey performed by Market Intelligence Group, Bobi Wine had the support of about 59% of the Ugandans. On 16 January, it is alleged that the Electoral Commission announced, even before all votes were counted, that Bobi Wine received 35.08% of the votes. This announcement was heavily criticized since there are 409 polling stations with a 100% turnout.

Many videos of ballot box stuffing turned up. Other opposition leaders also stated that Bobi Wine had won and Museveni was falsely sworn in. Fact checker organization Pesacheck published that Uganda has not held honest election in over 30 years. On 9th February the European Parliament passed a resolution stating that the elections were violent and neither free nor fair.

After the 2021 elections Bobi wine showed it clearly that himself needs guidance and he lacked leadership skills because of the failure to manage his party.

And this is why most of the people started seeing him as a person who is not after rescuing the country but after showing off and reaching the levels the source said.

Bobi wine has shown his leadership weaknesses ever since his party started having in fights.

The principle started trusting and believing in a few people close to him and he neglected some people who would make him go on with his political ambitions.

The issue of chasing the former LOP Mathias Mpuuga who is said to be planning to startup his own political party and of which resulted into the closure of NUP offices which clearly show that Kyagulanyi has lost support from Masaka and of which clearly shows that some other members of the party have to follow Mpuuga because some people believed in him and they are very sure that he can make it.

This means that the life of NUP keeps on reducing everyday and then because of the way the principle is handling things according to the sources.

“It is too bad to lose something that you have worked for and suffered a lot to maintain it but you lose it due to carelessness and trusting the wrong people.” our source said.

According to our sources, this could be the end of the National Unity Platform. In a few years to come, we will be narrating it to our children as history.

The source added that some NUP members have started shifting from NUP to the patriotic League of Uganda like in an occasion that happened to Masaka yesterday as the chairman of PLU was visiting Masaka people and a certain number of NUP members showed interest in joining PLU.
