In a significant development, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University. The appointment was announced by Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe, who welcomed Dr. Kiyonga to the Makerere University community.
Dr. Kiyonga, a renowned medical professional and former politician, replaces Professor Ezra Suruma, who has served two terms as Chancellor since 2016. With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, Dr. Kiyonga brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Born in Kasese District in 1952, Dr. Kiyonga attended Makerere University School of Medicine, where he obtained his MBChB degree in 1978. He later earned a Master of Health Science degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 2004.
Dr. Kiyonga’s political career is equally impressive, having served as a Member of Parliament for Bukonzo County West and Uganda’s Ambassador to China. He has held various cabinet and non-cabinet posts, including Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Health.
As Chancellor, Dr. Kiyonga is expected to provide strategic leadership and guidance to Makerere University, one of Uganda’s premier institutions of higher learning. His appointment has been welcomed by the university community, who look forward to his contributions.
