Kisumu Suspects Released on Bail, 36 Defendants Granted Cash Bail Totaling 72 Million.

In a significant development, the 36 Kisumu suspects arrested and detained have been granted cash bail by the court. Each suspect has been ordered to pay 2 million shillings, totaling 72 million shillings.

The court’s decision comes after intense arguments from defense lawyers, who contested the suspects’ continued detention. The prosecution had opposed bail, citing concerns over the severity of the charges.

Family members and supporters of the suspects erupted in joy outside the courtroom, hailing the decision as a victory. “We are grateful to the court for upholding justice,” said one relative.

The 36 suspects were arrested in connection with alleged involvement in violent protests in Kisumu. They face charges related to rioting, malicious damage to property, and conspiracy.

Human rights organizations welcomed the bail ruling, citing concerns over prolonged pre-trial detention. “This decision reaffirms the principle of innocent until proven guilty,” said a local human rights advocate.

The suspects are expected to report to the investigating officer regularly as part of their bail conditions. The case will proceed to trial, with the prosecution expected to present its evidence.
