In a historic meeting, His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, welcomed Buganda royals and descendants of the late King Nuhu Rashid Kalema to his office on Tuesday, October 22nd. The visiting delegation, led by Prince Edward Kimera, custodian of King Kalema’s royal tombs at Mende, extended an invitation to Mufti Mubaje to join them in celebrating the life of their great ancestor.
The late King Kalema, who reigned from 1888 to 1891, was the only Muslim monarch of Buganda. Prince Kimera expressed the royal family’s desire to highlight King Kalema’s legacy within the Muslim community and to have their children pursue Islamic theological studies to become Muslim clerics.
Mufti Mubaje warmly received the invitation and pledged his support for the royal family’s endeavors. He ensured arrangements would be made for royal family members to study Islamic theology and confirmed his attendance at the upcoming event honoring King Kalema’s legacy.
This significant meeting was also attended by prominent figures, including Hon. Prof. Dr. Muhammadi Lubega Kisambira, UMSC National Chairperson; Sheikh Erias Kigozi, Kadhi of Wakiso Muslim District; and Hajjat Shania Kigozi, Country Director of One UMMAH.
This gathering marks a new era of cooperation and unity between the Muslim community and the Buganda kingdom. As the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) continues to promote Islam in Uganda, this partnership will undoubtedly foster greater understanding and development.
