May 17 in History: Battle of Karuma Falls

On May 17, 1979, Tanzanian forces captured the strategic Karuma Falls Bridge from Ugandan troops loyal to Idi Amin, marking a crucial milestone in the Uganda-Tanzania War. The Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) 205th Brigade advanced from Masindi to Gulu, overcoming Ugandan resistance and securing the bridge.

This battle was one of the last major engagements of the war, paving the way for the eventual overthrow of Idi Amin’s regime. The TPDF’s victory at Karuma Falls showcased their military prowess and contributed to the fall of Amin’s government.

The Uganda-Tanzania War had significant implications for the region, leading to a shift in power dynamics and a new era of politics in Uganda.
