Uganda’s Succession Question: Who Will Succeed Museveni?

The Deep State Politics

When the NRA captured power in 1986, Southerners jubilated, thinking they had won a war against the Northerners.

A few years later, NRA historicals believed state power was in their hands. However, it soon became apparent that power was concentrated within specific groups.

By 1996, some Southerners realized that power wasn’t evenly distributed among them, but rather was held by Westerners.

By 2001, Westerners understood that power was specifically in the hands of the Banyankore.

In 2006, the Banyankore discovered that the Bahima held state power.

In 2011, the Bahima realized that power was concentrated within a small clan, the Batsiita.

By 2016, the Batsiita understood that power was actually held by Museveni’s extended family.

In 2021, some members of Museveni’s extended family realized that power was held by his nuclear family.

Apparently, even within Museveni’s nuclear family, there’s a hierarchy of power. Some members have come to realize that the real state power lies with Museveni’s son.

Months after the rumored reshuffle, Museveni’s son will likely realize that the true power still lies with his father, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
