US Congress approved a bill requiring TikTok to be sold or risk being banned countrywide after President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law on Wednesday.
TikTok has been given 270 days to determine how to proceed in the U.S through doing one of these
three options: either to fight the bill in court and wins, alternatively sells TikTok US to a local owner, who would likely take it without its addictive algorithm; or TikTok simply closes and complies with the legislation.
In March of last year, the company’s Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew assured lawmakers that TikTok had taken steps to safeguard user data which U.S never put in consideration.
According to some of the business app insights ,The popular app is used by 170 million Americans, many of them are younger. More than half of TikTok users (51.8%) are aged 24 or under and 87.4% of its users are under the age of 45.
What make TikTok illegal in U.S ?
Legislators have been concerned about possible threats to national security from TikTok for a number of years. For example, the problem arose in 2019 when the U.S. Army started recruiting on the site.
FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed his “extreme concern” to Congress in November 2022 on the Chinese government’s potential to weaponize the data gathered through TikTok.
So for that reason above ,TikTok may just close down soon in the US if its legal fight is unsuccessful and a sale if not completed.
Many people find it unfair that the most widely used social networking programme ever would be separated from the richest user base on the planet (Americans). That would compel Bytedance to forfeit tens of billions of dollars and go away broke, but keep in mind that politics are involved in addition to business.
Many believe that TikTok potential ban is not being given enough consideration, but it is a real possibility. After outlawing American social media programmes like WhatsApp and Threads, China has been doing so for almost a decade. The whole Chinese market is lost on US tech businesses, but they still don’t sell firms there their old algorithms and name brands. America would lose its global competitive advantage as a result.
