The Opposition’s Predicament: How NUP Handed Over Kampala to NRM

By TV10 Deep State Politics

As the opposition fraternity celebrated the appointment of a strong Leader of Opposition (LOP) and other office bearers, a different story unfolded at the same headquarters. The National Unity Platform (NUP) was finalizing the handover of Kampala City to the regime that its voters had overwhelmingly rejected.

The process began during the nomination of party flag bearers, where a committee composed of state agents from other parties, NRM diehards, and Museveni’s handpicked protagonists within NUP was unexpectedly tasked with selecting candidates. This committee sifted out true activists and gave NUP cards to regime agents, either direct or indirect.

Kampala voters were forced to choose between state agents posing as opposition candidates. In Kawempe Division, for instance, all candidates were NRM agents masquerading as opposition. Ssegirinya, Kidandala, Ssebagala Latif, and others are known to have served NRM at various levels, yet Kawempe voters had to choose one of them, effectively voting for NRM.

NUP failed to provide a genuine opposition alternative, dumping true opposition incumbent MPs like Ssebagala Ssajjalyabeene and Kasibante Moses, despite their joining the party. Instead, the party gave cards to regime sympathizers, sealing the handover of the city to NRM at the parliamentary level.

All current NUP MPs in Kampala are regime agents, including Nyeko Derick (Makindye), Aloysius Mukasa (Lubaga South), Abubeker Kawalya (Lubaga North), and Ssegirinya Muhamad (Kawempe North). They helped Museveni fight true opposition out of Kampala.

When it came to councillors, NUP dumped renowned activists and shamelessly gave party flags to NRM, State House, or security organ agents. This betrayal continued in the race as party candidates were bought off, and their withdrawals were approved by the secretariat.

Fast-forward to the elections, Kampala voters voted NUP 100%, despite 60% of the candidates being regime agents. Last week, the party’s lack of control over its councillors was evident in the chaotic election of party flag bearers for Speakership positions.

The recent boxing bout between KCCA councillors as they voted for the party flag bearer was caused by the party’s lack of control over its money and NRM-loyal councillors. Zaharah Luyilika’s surprise win with 11 votes, despite her questionable background, shocked NUP leaders. Facts revealed that she was bankrolled by Saleh and had bribed councillors with 5 million each to vote for her.

NUP headquarters is in panic, fearing shame and loss of control over its NRM-leaning councillors. The party’s fate is sealed, and it seems NRM is set to take over Kampala.

The opposition needs to re-strategize and redesign a people’s struggle to break free from political bondage. As NUP has rolled the struggle back to square one, it’s time for a new approach.

In the spirit of the struggle, I demand the release of all political prisoners. They have been betrayed enough! RIP to the comrades who died in the struggle.
