The Legacy of John Bashaija Kazoora: A Champion of Democracy and Good Governance

John Bashaija Kazoora, a renowned Ugandan politician and retired Major in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, left an indelible mark on the country’s political landscape. His passing on April 20, 2025, marked the end of an era of dedicated service to the nation.

Kazoora’s military career was marked by his involvement in the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the 1980s, which brought President Yoweri Museveni to power. However, it was his transition to politics that truly defined his legacy. As a founding member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Kazoora played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s vision and direction.

Throughout his career, Kazoora remained committed to the principles of good governance, constitutionalism, and civilian oversight. His advocacy for the separation of military from politics was unwavering, and his vocal criticism of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) earned him both praise and criticism.

As a Member of Parliament for Kashari County from 1996 to 2006, Kazoora demonstrated his dedication to serving the people. His leadership and vision continue to inspire a new generation of leaders and citizens.

Kazoora’s legacy serves as a testament to the power of courage, wisdom, and commitment to public service. His impact on Ugandan politics will be felt for years to come, and his contributions to the pursuit of democracy and good governance will remain an inspiration to many.
