Regional Stability Enhanced as UPDF Triumphs Over CODECO Militants

By Cathy Mirembe

The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to secure the region and prevent the infiltration of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) remnants. In a recent battle at Fataki in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the UPDF successfully repelled consecutive attacks by the Cooperative for Development of the Congo (CODECO) rebels, killing 242 militants over two days.

This victory is a testament to the UPDF’s operational prowess and its commitment to regional stability. The CODECO rebels had recently allied with the ADF, escalating attacks against local populations and posing a significant threat to peace and security in the region. The UPDF’s decisive action has not only degraded the capabilities of these militant groups but has also sent a strong message that such acts of terror will not be tolerated.

The UPDF’s Operation Shujaa has been instrumental in supporting the Congolese army (FARDC) in its fight against Islamist militants in Eastern DRC. The operation has led to the destruction of enemy camps, the recovery of firearms and ammunition, and the rescue of hundreds of ADF abductees. These efforts have enabled the civilian population to return home, with schools resuming and markets operating in previously liberated regions.

The UPDF’s success in this operation is also a reflection of its commitment to regional cooperation and stability. The force has worked closely with the FARDC and other regional partners to share intelligence, coordinate operations, and build capacity. This collaborative approach has been critical in disrupting the networks and supply chains that sustain militant groups in the region.

The UPDF’s victory against the CODECO rebels is a significant achievement that underscores the force’s capabilities and commitment to regional stability. The operation serves as a model for effective regional cooperation and demonstrates the importance of decisive action in preventing the spread of terrorism and violence. As the region continues to face security challenges, the UPDF remains a critical partner in the pursuit of peace and stability.
