NUP Plans Shake-Up: Ssewanyana’s 10-Year Tenure Under Threat Ahead of 2026 Elections

By Dean Lubowa Saava

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is reportedly considering replacing Hon. Allan Ssewanyana as their flag bearer for the Makindye West constituency. This move comes after Ssewanyana’s decade-long tenure as the area’s Member of Parliament.

Reasons for the Potential Replacement:

Party Restructuring: NUP’s president, Bobi Wine, has been restructuring the party, removing some long-serving MPs, including Ssewanyana, to give opportunities to new candidates, some of whom are family members.

Controversies and Challenges: Ssewanyana has faced several challenges, including arrest and imprisonment for alleged involvement in machete-wielding murders in Masaka, which might have affected his relationship with the party leadership.

New Aspirants: Other candidates, like David Musiri, a Makerere University activist, have expressed interest in representing Makindye West, potentially drawing support from party members.

Implications for the 2026 Elections:

The potential replacement of Ssewanyana could significantly impact the 2026 elections in Uganda.

If NUP opts for new candidates, it may:

Revitalise the Party: Bringing in fresh faces could revitalise the party and attract younger voters.

Shift Political Dynamics: Changing the party’s representation in key constituencies might alter the political landscape, potentially affecting the outcome of the elections.

Impact on Voter Turnout: The introduction of new candidates could influence voter turnout, particularly among young and first-time voters.

Ultimately, the decision to replace Ssewanyana will depend on NUP’s internal dynamics and its strategy for the 2026 elections. The outcome will be closely watched, as it may have far-reaching implications for Ugandan politics.
