Tensions are running high in the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, with treasurer Benjamin Katana accusing Fred Nyanzi, brother of Robert Kyagulanyi (aka Bobi Wine), of promoting tribalism and divisions within the party.
Katana expressed concerns over “dangerous tribalistic tendencies” emerging among party members, specifically caused by Nyanzi’s alleged discrimination against and undermining of non-Baganda leaders.
Katana denied rumors of his defection to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), claiming Nyanzi sponsored these rumors to justify his conspiracy theories. An insider confirmed Katana’s allegations, stating Nyanzi has been at odds with Katana over access to party funds. Nyanzi has been accused of maligning Katana to remove him from his position.
NUP’s struggle to accommodate non-Baganda members due to tribalistic behaviors has led to divisions along tribal lines. The family of Jolly Mugisha, a Munyankole, accused NUP’s leadership of ignoring her during her hospitalization, citing preferential treatment for Baganda party leaders.
