The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced that it’s accepting applications from qualified members for the Kawempe North parliamentary and Kazo-Angola Ward L.C. 3 councillor by-elections. Mercy Walukamba, Chairperson of the Election Management Committee (EMC), made the call on January 28, 2025.
Interested applicants can submit their applications at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, which was officially inaugurated on November 3, 2023. The application window is open from Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 9:00 am to Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 12:00 noon.
This development comes as the NUP seeks to reclaim the Kawempe North parliamentary seat, which was previously held by the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya. The Electoral Commission has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the by-election, with nominations scheduled for February 26-27, 2025. The campaign period will run from February 28 to March 11, 2025.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced it will not hold internal primaries to select its candidate for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election.
This decision was revealed by the NRM chairman for Kampala, who also serves as the Kampala Division Mayor, Salim Uhuru. Uhuru explained that the party chairperson and President Museveni, directed party officials to ensure that only one NRM candidate is fronted.

The directive aims to prevent internal disagreements that often lead to party members running as independents, a scenario the NRM believes has cost them several seats in past elections.
