POLITICS: UGANDA’S OPPOSITION POLITICS IN DILEMA.

The Ideal politics from the opposition in Uganda is making a round of discussion fromUgandans who normally follow the current affairs. The case in point here isHon.Mathias Mpuga the current Member of Parliament representing NyendoMukungwe Division Masaka city and the former leader of opposition whose
intentions poses questions that are still unanswered.

Hon.Mpuga is seen as a centre of decision per his Political carrier as we are heading to 2026 Presidential and Parliamentary general elections come 2026.According to our sources, it is suspected that Hon.Mpuga has an ambition of eitherNUP Presidency or contesting for the top position in Uganda [ Contesting for
President of Uganda] a narrative that is connected to how he is conducting hisPolitics mostly in his political stronghold greater Masaka.

Mpuga’s reign as the leader of opposition in parliament came to an end recently when we witnessed the appointment of Hon.Joel Ssenyonyi to replace him in a position which some Ugandans thought he would have been given another term basing their argument on his experience in Politics way back from Democratic Party.
During his two and a half Years as Leader of Opposition there has been speculations linking him to the ruling regime as some of the opposition supporters have been doubting his deliberations and conduct in Parliament.

Mpuga joined NUP as it started and he has been acting as the deputy president of the party in Central Region, a stronghold of the party, but recently there were speculations that he made a pronouncement banning the party mobilisation arrangements [kunga Mobilisation] in greater Masaka which most opposition
supporters regards as deliberate move to sabotage party programs in favour of his personal political ambitions.

According to sources from within NUP party, Hon.Mpuga might be building a platform to contest for the presidency of the party come the next delegates conference due to take place before the 2026 elections, a move that is regarded deliberately to take over the position of the current party president Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.

ADVERT

According to the NUP Constitution as amended in 2023, a party President has a direct position for a flag bearer in presidential elections however it also gives a former president the same mandate for contesting, this means if Hon.Mpuga is targeting for party presidency it’s a leeway for him to contest for Presidency of
Uganda on Party card.In a closed interaction with some top NUP party members we found out that this narrative has developed some misunderstandings and discomfort within the party
