UGANDA PARLIAMENT EXHIBITION: Online Campaign Exposing Abuse Of Power.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has called on Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga to step down from his role as parliamentary commissioner after admitting to receiving 500 million shillings.

In a press release issued by the NUP secretariat on Thursday night, party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, held a meeting with senior party officials in response to corruption accusations involving several NUP members, including Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, and other commissioners.

The allegations suggested that Mpuuga and other commissioners had misused funds by awarding themselves large sums of money under false pretences, with Mpuuga allegedly receiving 500 million shillings.

During the meeting, Mpuuga confessed to his involvement in the misallocation of funds and expressed his regret for his actions.

“In light of this, he was strongly advised that the honorable thing to do at this moment is to resign from his position as parliamentary commissioner immediately,” a portion of the statement read.

The NUP statement emphasized the party’s values of discipline, reliability, inclusiveness, integrity, patriotism, and service, stating that any acts of corruption and abuse of power are in direct contradiction to these values.

Meanwhile, over the past few days, an online campaign led by Makerere University lecturer Dr. Spire Ssentongo and other activists under the hashtag #Uganda Parliament Exhibition has been exposing cases of abuse of power and mismanagement of public affairs within Parliament.

Among the allegations include claims against Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, as well as members of the ruling NRM party and opposition MPs, who have allegedly used their positions to secure jobs for relatives and engage in corrupt activities for personal gain.

In response to the exhibition, Parliament’s Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, stated that the Parliament had acknowledged the concerns raised and was actively investigating those specific issues.
