Omusinga Calls for Kasese Municipality to be Elevated to City Status

Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, the king of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, has indeed called for the elevation of Kasese Municipality to city status. This call was made during the celebration marking 50 years of Kasese District. The move to grant city status to Kasese Municipality is likely aimed at boosting the region’s economic and infrastructure development.

In recent years, Omusinga Mumbere has been actively involved in promoting the development of his kingdom. After a seven-year absence, he returned to his kingdom in October 2023 and has since been working on rebranding the Rwenzururu Kingdom. His efforts have been praised by President Museveni, who commended him for promoting peace, unity, and socio-economic transformation in the region.

Granting city status to Kasese Municipality could have several benefits, including:

  • Economic Growth: A city status could attract more investments, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
  • Infrastructure Development: City status often comes with increased funding for infrastructure development, such as roads, housing, and public facilities.
  • Tourism Promotion: Kasese’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty could be better promoted, attracting more tourists and boosting the local economy.

However, it’s worth noting that another pressing issue in the region is the call for Kasese district to be split into more administrative units. Busongora County North MP, Hon. Sowedi Kitanywa, has been advocating for this, citing the need for services to be extended nearer to the people.
