Bugingo Shooting Incident: Police Review CCTV Footage

Pastor Bugingo

Police have embarked on reviewing footage from various CCTV cameras as part of the ongoing investigations into the attempted assassination of House of Prayer Ministries’ Pastor Aloysius Bugingo.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, reviewing CCT footage will enable investigators find out whether Bugingo was trailed by his attackers or they waylaid him.

“We are still reviewing CCTV footages right from Salt TV headquarters in Lungujja following up the route(he took) to find out whether he was trailed or something else,” Owoyesigyire said.

Bugingo, a prominent pastor, escaped death on Tuesday night when unknown assailants said to be travelling on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle at around 9pm at Bawalakata Junction along National Housing Road, in Namungoona zone 2 in Lubaga division.

Unfortunately, Bugingo bodyguard, Corporal Richard Muhumuza attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC) was killed. According to police, the shooters fled the scene using the motorcycle. Bugingo would later drive to Mulago National Referral Hospital where his bodyguard was pronounced dead.

Speaking to journalists for the first time after the shooting, the senior pastor at the House of Prayer Ministries said God had given him a second chance.

“Satan wanted me dead by God wanted me alive. God has given me another chance to live. There should be no fear or worries, we shall go through this by God’s grace. Do not be misled by anyone claiming that I am dead. I’m alive. This is not an old video because the bullets were fired last night and I am speaking now. I’m alive,” he said.

The Special Forces Command on Wednesday said the UPDF had launched investigations into the shooting in which one of their own was killed. “As SFC,  we have launched investigation into the matter to find out what exactly transpired,” Maj Jimmy Omara, the SFC spokesperson told the Nile Post.

Forensic report

A statement by police on Wednesday indicated that by the time they responded to the scene, it had already been contaminated by the locals who came to view what exactly had happened.

However, according to the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, a forensic examination is being done on Bugingo’s vehicle by experts from the police’s forensics directorate at Naguru to ascertain any clues that could lead them to the shooters.

“The forensic directorate is currently picking evidence from the vehicle which is the other scene of crime. Projectiles have already been picked from the car to ascertain the number of bullet holes. Police at Old Kampala is just waiting for their(forensics) report to guide in the next step of investigations,” Owoyesigyire said.

He noted that so far, investigations, owing to the spent cartridges picked from the scene indicate that the type of weapon used in the shooting was a pistol. “We can only tell the type of gun to be a pistol but the details of how many bullets fired  and the type of pistol can only be got from the forensic report.”
