Uganda Airlines is preparing to introduce direct flights to London by April 2025, marking a historic step for the country’s aviation sector. The announcement was made by Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala, at the Aviation Stakeholders Engagement Breakfast at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday.
This new route promises to significantly enhance Uganda’s international connectivity, driving growth in both tourism and trade.
In his address, Minister Wamala highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to align with international aviation standards. He assured attendees that Entebbe International Airport is undergoing extensive upgrades to meet the requirements of London’s aviation authorities, enabling Uganda Airlines to operate direct flights to Gatwick Airport.
“By April 2025, Uganda Airlines will offer non-stop flights to London. I encourage you to plan ahead—there’s no reason to delay buying your tickets. This new route will open up fresh opportunities for both business and leisure travelers,” Wamala stated.
The announcement was met with excitement from aviation stakeholders, who view the direct London flights as a transformative development for Uganda’s air travel industry. Currently, passengers traveling between Uganda and the UK must transit through other airports, but the introduction of direct flights will cut travel time and greatly improve convenience.
These non-stop flights are expected to elevate Uganda’s international profile, boosting tourism and trade between Uganda and the UK. Minister Wamala emphasized that securing this route involved extensive negotiations and significant improvements to Entebbe Airport, ensuring it meets global safety and security standards.
“This marks a major milestone in positioning Uganda as a key player in global aviation,” Wamala remarked. “With more international airlines operating into Entebbe, we’re creating a thriving environment for economic growth and international collaboration.”
Beyond the London route, Wamala shared updates on other key developments in Uganda’s aviation sector. He highlighted the recent operationalization of Kabalega International Airport in Hoima, which is now handling cargo flights. The airport is also slated for further expansion, with plans to transform it into a fully operational international airport. Additionally, Gulu International Airport is undergoing improvements to better serve the northern region of Uganda.
Wamala also emphasized Uganda Airlines’ strong performance in recent international aviation security audits. The country’s aviation security system scored an impressive 81.6%, assuring global partners of Uganda’s commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards.
As part of the broader strategy to enhance Uganda’s aviation sector, the government is actively engaging in air service negotiations with several countries. A recent agreement with Serbia is one such example, and Wamala also highlighted the importance of collaboration within the East African Community (EAC) to improve regional air transport links.
Looking forward, the Minister urged all stakeholders to continue working together to overcome challenges and leverage the opportunities presented by these developments. He underscored the importance of improving the passenger experience and developing infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for air travel.
“Direct flights to London will strengthen Uganda’s global connections and contribute significantly to our socio-economic development,” Wamala concluded. “Let’s keep striving for excellence in every aspect of our aviation industry.”
