DRC Conflict: South African and Rwandan Presidents Demand End to Violence

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Rwandan President Paul Kagame have joined forces to call for an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following a surge in violence involving the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group. The urgent appeal comes after a devastating week that saw the loss of 13 South African troops, with nine killed last week and four more confirmed dead on Tuesday.

The conflict has taken a severe toll on the eastern city of Goma, where intense fighting has resulted in 17 deaths and nearly 370 injuries. The M23 rebels claim to have seized control of the city, further complicating the situation. Ramaphosa and Kagame’s joint statement emphasizes the pressing need for peace to prevent further escalation and protect the lives of innocent civilians.

The two leaders’ commitment to finding a peaceful solution is rooted in their shared concern for regional stability. They recognize that the DRC conflict has far-reaching implications, affecting not only the local population but also the broader region. By advocating for a ceasefire, Ramaphosa and Kagame aim to create a conducive environment for dialogue and reconciliation.

Their efforts are part of a broader initiative to promote peace and stability in the Great Lakes region. The leaders are engaging in diplomatic efforts, consulting with regional stakeholders, and exploring opportunities for collective action to address the complex challenges facing the region.

An M23 spokesperson exclusively told Sky News that “Goma will never be the same again”.

As the situation in the DRC remains volatile, the international community is watching with bated breath. The call for a ceasefire by Ramaphosa and Kagame serves as a beacon of hope, underscoring the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in resolving conflicts.
