HEALTH: Unplanned Parenthood

Unplanned pregnancies remain a significant concern in Uganda. The ministry of health continues to argue all citizens to prioritize family planning and reproductive health service to prevent unintended pregnancies and ensure the well being of a mother.

Most of the citizens should adopt to family planning methods because unplanned pregnancies puts both the mother and child at risk. The ministry of health is committed to increasing access to comprehensive sexuality education and contraceptive services to empower all individuals to make informed choices.

This is increasing the population of the country of which is making the budgeting tough as the country is suffering from insufficient funds since most of the income sources are dormant and most of the active ones are not willing to bring out the money for public use but instead for their personal benefits.

This population is also increasing the encroachment of the areas that are the sources of income to he country for example the encroachment on game parks and swamps.

The unplanned pregnancies have made most of the families suffer high expenses because of ou population that is unequal to our available resources.

This has caused poverty and has increased family conflicts especially during the inheritance and sharing of the available family property.

This on the other hand is increasing the number of single mothers and street kids in Uganda since sleeping with a man will never make him yours and a babby will not make the man stay.

The unplanned pregnancies are common in teenagers, which is forcing most of them to drop out of school and others adopt to abortion which is also risky.

Abortion can some times damage the womb, excessive bleeding and incomplete abortion which may require an additional surgical abortion procedure, infection of the uterus or Fallopian tubes, scarring the inside of the uterus, sepsis or septic shock, uterine perforation and some times death.

Unsafe abortion continues to contribute significantly to this public health problem. According to the Uganda ministry of Health, Uganda registered an estimated 8% increase of maternal deaths due to unsafe abortion in 2010.

According to Uganda Demographic and Health Survey in 2008 an estimated 1.2 million unplanned pregnancies occurred in Uganda more than four in 10 births (43%) were unplanned 2011

Here are some of the family planning methods that are advisable to be used for safety. The use of condoms, emergence contraceptives, oral contraceptive pill, implant, injections and table ligation.

These family planning methods maybe sometimes be harmful to the health of an individual as it may cause over bleeding, sore of the breasts, nausea, headaches. but these signs always go away after two or three months and its not that everyone experiences these side effects.

Though family planning has its side effects, it shouldn’t make one suffer and keep bothered. It is advisable that if you see some of these side effects, you should talk to your doctor or nurse about trying another method of family planning.
