The Mwanga II Magistrate’s Court has issued a final warning to six of nine youths accused of falsely claiming Pastor Robert Kayanja sodomized them. The court directed them to proceed with their defence or risk representing themselves at the next hearing on July 18, 2025.
The trial, which began in July 2023, has faced repeated delays. On Tuesday, proceedings stalled again after a defence lawyer cited illness. Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya opposed the adjournment, accusing the defence of intentionally stalling the case.
The accused—some of whom were police officers—face charges including defamation, conspiracy to defeat justice, and giving false information to police. They allegedly fabricated claims of abuse in 2021. Medical reports found no evidence supporting their allegations.
Magistrate Adams Byarugaba warned that no further adjournments will be accepted, and urged the accused to find committed legal representation or proceed without lawyers.
