President Museveni Unveils Lot 1 of the Kampala Flyover Project at Clock Tower

On Wednesday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially inaugurated Lot 1 of the Kampala Flyover Project, located at the iconic Clock Tower. This monumental project, valued at USD 80 million, represents Kampala’s largest infrastructure initiative to date. The aim is to improve the city’s traffic flow, shorten travel times, and enhance its drainage systems, all of which are crucial for the capital’s urban development.

During the event, President Museveni shared his satisfaction with the progress of the flyover, revealing that his own experience using the newly completed portion already showed noticeable improvements in congestion.

“I drove through the City Centre and used the new Kampala Flyover. I didn’t face any of the usual congestion. It’s not fully finished yet, but it has already resolved many of the issues we faced,” President Museveni said, emphasizing the project’s positive impact on the city’s traffic situation.

Lot 1, now officially commissioned, comprises several critical components designed to address the city’s most pressing infrastructure needs. These include:

  • Clock Tower Flyover: Spanning 584 meters, with a 366-meter bridge, this flyover significantly eases traffic at one of the busiest intersections in Kampala.
  • Pedestrian Bridges: Three pedestrian bridges have been constructed at strategic points: Shoprite (92 meters), Clock Tower (238.7 meters), and Kibuli (40 meters), ensuring safe passage for pedestrians.
  • Nsambya Underpass: This 375.8-meter underpass, with a four-lane road section, helps to alleviate congestion and improve the flow of traffic.
  • Junction Improvements: Key intersections at Shoprite, Clock Tower, Nsambya, and Kibuli have been upgraded to facilitate smoother traffic movement.
  • Road Widening: A total of 3,190 meters of major roads have been expanded as part of the project to accommodate the growing number of vehicles.
  • Drainage Solutions: New box culverts have been installed at critical locations such as St. Denis, Pan African, and Kayuga, to tackle flooding and improve the city’s drainage system.

With these improvements, the project aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the city’s transport network, making it more accessible and safe for all users.

At the event, President Museveni urged Ugandans to take better care of public infrastructure, stressing the importance of maintaining these developments for future generations. He called on citizens to avoid littering and misuse of the facilities, underlining that sustainable progress requires a collective effort from all citizens.

He also encouraged Ugandans to make full use of the newly enhanced infrastructure to stimulate economic activities and elevate Uganda’s standing within the competitive African market.

With the completion of Lot 1, attention now turns to Lot 2 of the Kampala Flyover Project. This next phase will further extend the flyover network and introduce additional upgrades to the city’s transport system. As Kampala continues to grow, these developments are expected to play a key role in transforming the city into a more organized and efficient hub for both business and everyday life.
