Police have arrested Eva Mbabazi, a woman suspected to have been the last person seen with the late Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, who was found dead under unclear circumstances at Dream Guest House in Lubowa, along Entebbe Road.
Mbabazi, believed to be in her early 20s, was apprehended following public outcry and speculation on social media, where several users alleged that she had been in the company of the prominent medical practitioner shortly before his sudden death.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, Dr. Kiggundu checked into the guest house at approximately 5:45 PM on June 21, 2025. Less than an hour later, his lifeless body was discovered in the room he had booked.
“CCTV footage shows the suspect, identified as Eva Mbabazi, leaving the room that had earlier been booked by the deceased,” Onyango revealed. “We have recorded her statement, and a general inquiry file has been submitted to the state attorney for further guidance.”
While early findings suggest that Dr. Kiggundu may have died of a heart attack, police say investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding his death.
Dr. Kiggundu, who served as the President of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Uganda (ALSU), was a highly respected figure in Uganda’s medical community. His passing has left a void among colleagues and students alike.
In light of public speculation and unverified claims circulating online, authorities have urged the public to remain patient and avoid spreading misinformation.
“This is a sensitive investigation, and we request the public to refrain from drawing conclusions,” SSP Onyango cautioned.
More details are expected to emerge as police finalize forensic and postmortem investigations into the case.
