NUP’s Pathy Mbabazi Appears in Court Over Hate Speech Charges

Pathy Mbabazi, the 28-year-old National Unity Platform (NUP) district registrar for Bushenyi, is currently standing trial at the Bushenyi Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of hate speech against President Museveni and his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Mbabazi was arrested on March 3, 2025, in Ishaka Division, Bushenyi District, and is currently being held on remand at Nyamushekera Government Prison.

The Bushenyi Chief Magistrate’s Court, where Mbabazi is appearing, is one of the many chief magistrate courts in Uganda, with jurisdiction to hear and determine cases. The court is part of the country’s judicial system, which is divided into several levels, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and Chief Magistrate’s Courts.
