Museveni Pushes for African Representation at UN Security Council, Calls for Regional Integration.

By Dean Lubowa Saava.

President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of regional integration for countries in the Maghreb region, citing strategic security, economic growth, and political stability as key benefits. He urged these nations to put aside historical rivalries and foster unity, highlighting the potential for the Maghreb region to become a powerful center of gravity.

Museveni made these remarks while hosting a delegation of students from the Algerian High War College at his country home in Rwakitura. He commended Algeria for its anti-colonial stance and support for African liberation, noting that Algeria has been a key player in the anti-colonial struggle since gaining independence in 1962.

The President also emphasized the importance of strategic security in achieving prosperity, citing the chaos in Libya as an example of what can happen without a stable and secure environment. He argued that Africa needs a center of gravity, which can only be achieved through integration, much like the United States of America has done over the past 120 years.

Museveni also touched on the issue of Africa’s representation at the United Nations Security Council, revealing that a position has been agreed upon for Africa to have two seats on a rotational basis.

He emphasized the need for African leaders to adopt a more patriotic, pan-African, and self-reliant approach to development, criticizing the philosophical and ideological bankruptcy of some leaders as a major obstacle to Africa’s progress.

The visiting delegation, led by Brig. Gen. Benhamouda Rabal, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his hospitality and insightful remarks. The Algerian War College delegation also visited various key sites in Uganda, including the UPDF headquarters and several government ministries.
