The High Court in Kampala has ordered that lawyer Eron Kiiza be brought before the court on March 25th, 2025, for a hearing of his bail application. Kiiza was convicted of contempt of court in January 2025 and is currently serving a 9-month sentence at Kitalya Prison. He applied for bail, citing family responsibilities, his professional obligations, and the likelihood of success in his pending appeal. Kiiza presented three sureties to support his application.
However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has opposed the bail, arguing that Kiiza’s actions as an advocate harmed the court’s dignity and that his sureties are not substantial. The DPP also contends that Kiiza’s appeal should be heard by the Court Martial Appeals Court, not the High Court, and that the appeal has little chance of success. The DPP urges the court to deny bail to maintain the integrity of the judicial process. The bail hearing will take place on March 25th before Justice Michael Elubu.
