Former VP Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi Donates Land for Prison Construction

Former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has donated land in Kyanamukaka, Masaka District, for a new prison and staff quarters. The donation aims to enhance Uganda’s prison infrastructure and was officially handed over to Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons, John Byabashaija, on March 23, 2025. Government officials praised the donation, expecting it to improve prison services’ capacity and working conditions.

However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Critics argue that resources could be better spent on schools, hospitals, or factories, which are more urgent for the region’s development. Local resident Walakira Moses expressed concerns, stating that while the initiative is important, Masaka needs more industries and services to improve people’s lives.

On the other hand, supporters believe the prison will create jobs and improve security, providing a needed correctional facility. The debate continues, with many questioning the prioritization of prison construction over other community needs. Construction is expected to begin soon, with ongoing discussions about the facility’s long-term impact.
