In a major boost to Uganda’s international connectivity, Saudi Arabia’s low-cost carrier Flynas has officially launched direct flights between Riyadh and Entebbe, marking a significant milestone for both nations. The first flight, XY345, an Airbus A320 Neo, touched down at Entebbe International Airport early on January 16, 2025, at 3:30 AM, with a grand water cannon salute to celebrate the new service. This direct connection promises to enhance trade, tourism, and labor mobility between Saudi Arabia and Uganda, while also providing Ugandans with greater access to the Kingdom.
Flynas will operate three flights weekly—on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—offering more affordable travel options between the two cities. This new air link comes at a crucial time when Ugandans are seeking easier access to Saudi Arabia for work, religious pilgrimages, and trade opportunities. It also aligns with the growing trend of labor migration from Uganda to the Kingdom, which saw a dramatic rise in 2022, with more than 10,000 Ugandans finding employment there.
The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has hailed Flynas’ entry as a major development, reinforcing Uganda’s aviation growth and strengthening its relationship with Saudi Arabia. “This direct route is a significant addition to our growing network, enhancing the potential for economic exchange and cultural ties,” said the CAA in a statement.
The new route is also expected to contribute to Uganda’s Pilgrims Experience Programme, facilitating travel for those making religious journeys to Saudi Arabia. In addition, Flynas’ affordable fares will support the country’s tourism and labor export sectors, which are vital to the economy.
This agreement has allowed many Ugandans to secure jobs, with remittances from these workers accounting for $600 million annually.
Since its rebranding in 2013, Flynas has positioned itself as one of the leading low-cost carriers in the region. The airline operates a fleet of modern Airbus A320s and offers budget-friendly travel options across 70+ destinations in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. As part of its mission to connect people to the Kingdom and beyond, Flynas has expanded into Europe and other global markets, making international travel more accessible to a wider range of passengers
With Flynas now joining other international carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines, the Riyadh-Entebbe route adds another convenient link between Uganda and the Middle East. This increase in connectivity will further support Uganda’s growing aviation market, offering more options for travelers and fostering deeper economic and cultural ties between the two countries.
As the demand for affordable air travel continues to rise, Flynas’ entry into the Ugandan market is expected to have lasting effects, facilitating greater movement of people and goods between the two nations. With its focus on efficiency, reliability, and competitive pricing, Flynas is ready to play a key role in Uganda’s evolving aviation landscape.
With its commitment to customer service and affordable travel, Flynas is not just offering a flight, but a bridge between nations. The introduction of direct flights from Riyadh to Entebbe is set to open new doors for both businesses and individuals, whether for work, religious purposes, or tourism. This is a pivotal moment in Uganda’s aviation expansion, and Flynas is set to play an integral part in the future of air travel in the region.
