The Democratic Party (DP) has named Henry Kasacca as its candidate for the Kawempe North by-election, set for March 13. Kasacca, a member of the Buganda Lukiko and Programs Manager at IPOD, was introduced by DP Electoral Commission Chair Kennedy Mutenyo.
Mutenyo noted that the by-election presents a new playing field, as the top contenders from the last general election, who secured nearly 90% of the vote, are not running this time.
Kasacca focused on governance and socio-economic transformation, emphasizing that the election should be about restoring Uganda’s political direction, not rewarding individuals. He also warned against political opportunists who frequently switch allegiances for personal gain.
The race includes candidates from multiple parties. NUP has fielded Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, while NRM has endorsed Faridah Nambi, with Hajjat Hanifah Karadi running as an independent. FDC is backing musician Khalifa Aganaga. Independent candidates include Muhammad Luwemba and Twahirah Akandinda Ssegirinya, widow of the late MP.
The Electoral Commission has set nominations for February 26 and 27, with campaigns from February 28 to March 11.
This by-election follows the passing of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, leaving the Kawempe North seat vacant.
