NUP Official and Journalist Injured in Kawempe During Election Probe

On Wednesday, National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya was injured, and Spark TV cameraman Steven Kibwiika was hospitalized after an assault in Kawempe, Kampala.

The incident occurred as Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, Rubongoya, and media members visited a house following claims of pre-ticked ballots ahead of the Kawempe North by-election. They found no pre-marked ballots, but tensions rose when they questioned the occupants about removing vehicle number plates.

Ssenyonyi demanded answers, and the situation escalated when the residents insisted they had the right to act as they pleased. The confrontation led to a violent scuffle. Rubongoya was injured, and Kibwiika was attacked while filming the event.

The NUP condemned the attack, calling it state-backed intimidation aimed at opposition figures and independent media. Authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
