Muhoozi Makes His Mark: Three Senior Officers Promoted in Latest UPDF Reshuffle

By Dean Lubowa Saava

In a move aimed at bolstering the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has promoted three senior officers to the rank of Acting Major General. This development is part of the new establishment’s efforts to strengthen the military and recognize outstanding service.

The three officers promoted are Charles Byanyima, Deus Sande, and Daniel Kakono, with Major General Kakono currently serving as the Field Artillery Division Commander. This move is seen as a strategic step towards modernizing Uganda’s armed forces and ensuring that competent leaders are placed in key positions.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who assumed the role of Chief of Defence Forces earlier this year, has been lauded for prioritizing merit-based promotions and fostering professionalism within the UPDF. This latest round of promotions aligns with his vision of ensuring the military is equipped to face emerging challenges.

One notable example of Gen. Kainerugaba’s merit-based approach is the promotion of Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye to Acting Major General in January 2025. Kulayigye, who serves as the Director of Defence Public Information, was recognized for his excellent long service and representation of the UPDF in the public domain.

As the UPDF continues to evolve, these promotions demonstrate Gen. Kainerugaba’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding outstanding service, while also positioning the military for future success.
