South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar, a long-time political rival of President Salva Kiir, has been placed under house arrest, according to his party.
On Wednesday night, an armed convoy led by senior security officials, including the defense minister, entered Machar’s residence in the capital, Juba, and disarmed his bodyguards. The United Nations has warned that South Sudan is on the brink of renewed civil war following weeks of escalating tensions between Machar and President Kiir.
