Nimule, Uganda September 24–Armed thugs have attacked and set ablaze a Kampala-bound bus near Lakarakak between Nyerjebe and Kubi on the Juba-Nimule road in early hours of Tuesday, September 24

Initial reports said fifteen people have been killed and several others escaped with wounds and fled in nearby bushes. Others are said to have been abducted by the gunmen.

The bus belonging to Babeto Coach company Registration Number SSD 089Z, was heading to Kampala from Juba in Southern Sudan. Details of the incident are still sketchy but the management of Babito Coaches have confirmed the incident.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir September 13, 2024 announced an extension of the transitional period by two years and postponed the elections for a second time following a delay in 2022.

South Sudan has formally been at peace since 2018 agreement ended a five year conflict responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths, as violence between rival communities flared frequently.

The elections would have picked leaders to succeed the transitional government which includes Kiir and first Vice President Riek Machar, whose respective forces battled each other during the civil war.
