FUFA Appoints Muhumuza and Byekwaso to Lead CHAN 2024 Campaign

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially named Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso as the new coaches for the Uganda Cranes ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The announcement marks a strategic move aimed at revitalizing Uganda’s performance on the continental stage.

Fred Muhumuza, known for his tactical discipline and player development focus, will work alongside Morley Byekwaso, a former Uganda Cranes midfielder and experienced coach with a strong track record in domestic competitions. The duo brings a blend of technical acumen, leadership, and familiarity with local talent—qualities that FUFA believes are crucial for the national team’s success in CHAN, a tournament exclusively reserved for players active in their home countries.

FUFA President Moses Magogo expressed confidence in the newly appointed coaches during the unveiling ceremony. “We are delighted to entrust the leadership of the CHAN squad to Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso. Both have demonstrated a deep understanding of our football landscape, and we believe they are the right team to take the Cranes forward in this campaign,” he said.

The appointment comes at a time when the Uganda Cranes are seeking to improve their record at the CHAN tournament, having struggled to make a significant impact in past editions. With local players hungry to prove their worth on the continental stage, the new coaching duo is expected to harness this energy and instill a competitive edge in the team.

Morley Byekwaso, who previously served as head coach of the Uganda U-20 team and interim coach for the senior side, brings invaluable experience and a player-first approach. Fred Muhumuza, widely respected for his analytical insights and calm demeanor on the sidelines, complements Byekwaso with a methodical and modern coaching style.

Preparations for CHAN 2024 are expected to begin shortly, with training camps and local league scouting already underway. The focus, according to FUFA, will be on building a cohesive squad capable of advancing beyond the group stages and challenging for the title.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the Cranes enter this new chapter under the stewardship of Muhumuza and Byekwaso. Their appointment signals a renewed commitment to excellence and the continued development of Ugandan football talent.
